Have you ever had someone ask you a question that offended you a little?
Have you ever said something to a mother that you realized later may have been upsetting in some way?
People are naturally curious and some people just love to ask questions.
Here are 5 things that you should never say to a mom and things that you can say instead.
- Don’t say: You look tired.
Whether I have an actual job or not I have 24/7 job at home so of course I’m tired. It’s not necessary to point it out!
Instead you could say: You’re doing a great job.
- Don’t say: (To a stay at home mom) What do you do all day?
Some days I’m very productive, cleaning the house, taking care of my kid, even taking a shower. Some (most) days, not so much. Is that anybody’s business, though?
Instead you could say: You are looking great and your house is so nice!
- Don’t say: (To a working mom) Do you ever see your kids?
If a mom has a job that they have to get up and get ready for and THEN come home and take care of their kids (first of all, she’s superwoman so watch out she might hit you) they don’t need people asking them crazy questions. Of course she sees her kids. Who do you think feeds them dinner, gives them a bath, gets them ready for bed?
Instead you could say: You’re an awesome mom for working hard at work and at home!
- Don’t say: You’re going to let your kid(s) do that?
Is my child doing something that offends you? Maybe something that you think is dangerous? Am I looking right at my kid when you ask if I’m going to let them do what I’m watching them do? Yes, I’m gonna let them do it! Just because you don’t understand or agree with my parenting methods doesn’t mean you’re right and I’m wrong.
Instead you could say: Your kid(s) is/are adorable and so well behaved!
- Don’t say: Why are you so stressed all the time?
Well, raising a child can be a little stressful. Watching the news on any given day you will probably see some kid found a gun, a knife, a stupid swallow dish detergent pods challenge. It can be a little stressful.
Instead you could say: You’re raising a human, I understand how that can be stressful. You’re doing an amazing job!
If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all. – Every mom ever
